Is my Child Experiencing a Speech Delay?

Language Delays

What is a Language Delay?

Language is how your child shares and understands ideas. If your toddler is struggling to build a vocabulary, connect words, or follow simple everyday directions, they may be experiencing an expressive language delay or be a "late talker."

Signs to look for at home:

  • Limited Vocabulary: Uses very few words, or has stopped using words they once knew.

  • Communication Frustration: Relies on crying or pulling your hand instead of pointing or speaking.

  • Difficulty Understanding: Struggles to follow simple, everyday instructions.

  • No Word Combinations: Not yet putting two words together by age two (e.g., "more milk").

Speech Delays

What is a Speech Delay?

Speech is the physical coordination of making sounds using the mouth, tongue, and lips. Children with speech delays often understand everything and have large vocabularies, but struggle to form sounds correctly.

Signs to look for at home:

  • Unclear Speech: Speaks in full phrases, but the words sound indistinct or hard to understand.

  • Intelligibility Issues: Family, teachers, or strangers frequently struggle to understand what they are saying.

  • Sound Swapping: Consistently swaps or drops letters (e.g., saying "tat" for "cat" or leaving off word endings).

  • Communication Frustration: Sounds visibly upset when people cannot understand them on the first try.
